The Eagle, the Bat and the Crow

Early on in the Dreaming, the land was one huge mountain covered with great forests.

All kinds of strange animals lived in the forests.

Bat was a friendly animal who watched over the lonely and tired travellers warning them of danger.

A huge eagle ruled over the mountain with a small, but wise, crow.

Eagle was very greedy and wanted to be the only leader and own all the land.

Eagle kicked little Crow out of his nest and chased him away to a far away land.

In this far away land Crow learned the secret of making fire.
Crow wanted to teach Eagle a lesson so he flew home and set fire to Eagle’s mountain.

There is a huge upheaval and the great mountain broke into parts making the hills, valleys and plains we see today.

Dja Dja Wurrung people call Eagle the ‘Lord of the Forest and the Mountain.”

They call Crow the “Lord of the Hills and Plains.”

Eagles, crows and bats are special animals that may never be killed or eaten by Dja Dja Wurrung people.

The Two Volcanos

A long time ago in the Dreaming all mountains and rocks, rivers and trees, birds and beasts had magical life.
They could think. Speak and act.
Tarrengower (a mountain near what is now Maldon) was a very old and proud volcano who was tired of throwing out rocks and pouring out lava.
One day a young volcano called Lalgambook (now called Mount Franklin near Guildford) started to build up energy and started arguing with old Tarrengower.
Tarrengower, being old and wise, tried to ignore this naughty little volcano.
Lalgambook didn’t like being ignored so he started throwing hot rocks at Tarrengower. He showed off by spurting out ash, smoke and lava and calling Tarrengower names. A big quarrel started and rocks and ash went in all directions. Lalgambook wasn’t strong enough to reach Tarrengower with his rocks and Tarrengower laughed at him. (These rocks that couldn’t reach are believed to have formed what is now known as the Guildford plateau)
Tarrengower quietened down and just watched silly little Lalgambook showing off until Lalgambook blew his top.
Lalgambook’s fire died down and he lost all his energy.
Now Tarrengower and Lalgambook are just friendly old mountains watching over us.

Bunjil

A long time ago there was only one kangaroo, one emu and one of every other kind of animal.

A very wise being called Bunjil took these creatures and cut them into little pieces without taking their life.

He scattered the pieces far and wide so that all the land had these special animals. These animals grew and soon there were many animals all over the land.

Bunjil taught the Aboriginal people how to make spears and other weapons so they could get food.

Bunjil turned himself into the great wedge-tailed eagle.

Bunjil now lives in the sky and his name is given to what we call Jupiter, which is his campfire.

Bunjil is the creator spirit who created all the land and the animals and plants and the people.

One day, a animal we now call an echidna, never had spikes. The echidna was walking up his favourite mountain and looking at the beautiful trees and flowers. Not watching where he was going he was going, he hurt his foot on a rock on a big rock!
Not being able to walk properly he tripped and went rolling down the big mountain.
SMACK! The echidna felt a big bump on his head and when he looked up he realised he had just hit the rare, most beautiful tree in the forbidden forest. This tree had spikes all up its trunk and the echidna got one stuck in his head when he hit it! God lived in this tree and this made him extremely angry as the echidna had woken him from his sleep. He told the echidna that himself and all his children would be cursed with his spikes! He was also told a drought will occur in Australia as my spikes helped water come to land! The echidna was dreadfully upset for this and told the tree that he would make it up to him by protecting all the trees in land by keeping most ants away and asked for nothing in return. Ever since this day the animal the echidna has remained on earth with his spikes and kept his promise by protecting the trees from ants and termites. This is how the echidna got his spikes

A long time ago in space there was a green and yellow cod-fish. This cod-fish has magical powers and was very powerful. One day the cod-fish decended apon earth and he fell on this land called Australia. Apon his arrival he came across the rainbow snake. This rainbow snake had magical powers aswell and was very powerful. Both the rainbow snake and the cod-fish wanted to be king of the land. Both had many arguments which lead to immortal combat and in thier conflict they through beams of fire which created the desert. The rainbow snake wanted to blow the cod-fish away which created the winds. The cod-fish came up with a plan to try and kill the rainbow snake by drowning him. The cod-fish wanted to do this by covering the land in water. Once the cod-fish did this the rainbow snake drank most of the water. The water left behind made the rivers lakes and seas/oceans. The cod-fish and the rainbow snake next decided to rip out chunks of the land and then throw them at each other. The gaps from where they ripped the chunks out from the land created caves, canyons and valleys. The chunks that they through at each other landed on the surface of the land and created mountains and hills that we see today. After a life time of fighting they both got very tired and decided to go to sleep, the cod-fish went asleep in the murray river, and the rainbow snake went to sleep in the katherine gorge and all was well once more.

'How the Kangaroo began Jump.'

One day there was a Kangaroo that walked everywhere!!!

He wlked through the bush, on the road, through the outback and just anywhere. But one day this kangaroo was walking past an ants nest, and the ants stared biting his feet, so he jumps as high and fast as he can to get away from them, so they did't bite them any more.

after he got past them he stated to walk again, he walked past a beautiful and rare tree in the bush, while he was walking his feet started to hurt. He looked down and saw that this tree had prickles and they had all fallen off and he had stepped on them, so he started to walk again untill he got away.

Once he got away he sat down to get these prickles out of his feet and realised how much easier and quicker it is to jump around. After he got the prickles out he tryed it out and decided that Kangaroos should Jump and not Walk.

HOW THE BIRDS GOT THERE COLOURS:
Re-edited by Natasha
Back in the Dreamtime, all the bird tribes were the same colour, and that was black.
One day the Peaceful Dove caught his foot on a sharp piece of wood on a broken off tree branch. The Dove cried out for help, and all the other bird heard his cry and came to the place where the Dove laid. The Dove was in great pain and his foot had swollen up.
The other birds gathered and provided shelter for him with their wings. Some brought water for him to drink and some bathed his foot with water. All except Crow, who was in a bad mood and was angered by the attention the other birds were giving the little Dove.
Crow argued with the other birds and told them that they were wasting their time, the Peaceful Dove was done for. And indeed the foot was festering and swelling more all the time. But the other birds paid the Crow no attention, and finally they had had enough of him and chased him away.
Then the Pecan had an idea. She rushed forward and bit the Dove’s swollen foot with her sharp, hooked beak. The Dove cried out in pain and a stream of colours, all the colours in nature flowed out of the Dove’s foot and splashed all over every bird gathered ‘round.
Some got only a little colour, and some got one or two colours only. Some were splashed with many colours, and the Rainbow Lorikeet was splashed with a so much colour that he looked like the rainbow itself!
The Galah was splashed with rosey rink and grey, and the little Peaceful Dove was almost drained of colour till he was a light mottled grey-brown.
And so it was that all the bird tribes got their beautiful colours, except for the selfish, bad-tempered Crow who remains in his original black to this

HOW FISH WERE MADE

A long time ago there were Water Dragons and they would rule the ocean,no one would dare go near them but there was one animal that would and that was the Seagull. When the Water Dragons were breeding the seagulls would feed on there eggs when the Dragons left. So the Water Dragons have never seen the babies that have hatched from the eggs. So this breeding season the Water Dragons had a plan to try and stop the Seagulls.
So the Water Dragons had their eggs and moved them closer to shore, the Seagulls could see that the Water Dragons were about to laeve their eggs. The Water Dragons left but only about 50m away so the Seagulls wouldn't notice. The Seaulls didn't care where the Water Dragons went they went straight in for the attack. Just as the Seagulls were about to grab the eggs. The Water Dragons started to make a masive wave and the wave hit the Seagulls and the Seagulls went wild and flew off everywhere. So finally the Water Dragons got to see what the eggs hatched into, the eggs turned out to be Fish.
So when ever waves are around you might be able to see a Water Dragon but I wouldn't touch it because it mght be angry.

HOW THE EMU GOT SHORT WINGS
A long time ago, the emu bird lived in the sky. His nest was on the clouds. Every evening from his nest he used to watch the brolgas dancing by the lake and he loved their dance. That emu was wondering to himself if he could come down and dance like them.

So one day he flew down from his nest to where the brolgas were dancing. Then he went among them and asked the brolgas to teach him their dance.

One of the brolgas said to him “spread your wings out like this.” And then another one of the brolgas said to the emu, “come on, dance like this, the way we brolgas dance”. So he tried but his wings were so big they got in the way. That brolga got angry and stopped the emu, and shouted “spread your wings!" so he did spread them, then the brolga cut his wing so they were smaller, but he didn't know it would hurt the emu. the emu started bleeding and bleeding, the brogolas didn't know what to do. but the emu had an idea, the emu said to the brogolas get me rocks two of them. so they did and then the emu said crush them together and put blossom into it and crush it all together then put it on my wing. the brogolas did that. then they bandaged him up.But then the emu said " oh no" i am never going to be able to fly again and i wont be able to go back to my home. The brogolas insisted that he stayed with them because eventually he would be able to fly again.

HOW THE BIRD REALISED IT COULD FLY!

A long time ago where none of the birds could fly there was a lonely bird that was hated by all the other birds around, so one day he thought to himself im sick and tired of people calling me names and being bad to me,so he left his family to go and live somewhere else so he could get away from all of the abusing he was getting from other birds. He decided he would go and live on the tallest and the biggest mountain in the world, he was'nt sure what the mountain was called but all he knew was he was going to live there.
On his way to his future home he was walking down a skinny dirt track when all of these birds started to call him names and throwing stuff at him so he started to walk fasted so he would get away from them quicker, then he saw a lot of ants and beetles running his way and there was nothing he could do, he could'nt go back because the other birds would abuse him and throw stuff at him so he thought he would jump realy big so he would make it over all of them. He had one shot to do it so ass the ants and beetles got closer and closer he prepared for the jump of a life time, then suddenly the ants and beetles were right in front of him so he jumped! while he was in the air he thought to himself im not going to make it, im not going to make it!!
Then he realised he was making it and after he got over them he was still in the air so he looked down and seen the ground, he was gliding through the air, then he flapped his wings and he got even higher, he did this repeatedly until he was high enough to see the tallest and the biggest mountain in the world, so he began fly in the direction of his destination.
After a while of flying he was finally there so he settled down and fell asleep.

THE END!

The Lizard and the Emu

Long ago when the world had just been created there lived many different animals, however there weren’t as many as now.

First there was the lizard, it was a shy species and it only came out every now and then because it was self conscious of its short stumpy legs. The native people of the land had told stories of the lizard as only a few had seen it, some found this mythical creature fascinating, some didn’t believe in it and thought that a myth was all it was, nothing else. One day whilst wandering through the hot red desert the emu came across a shady billabong and as it went down to drink it could see in the water’s reflection a mysterious creature, the emu just stared into the reflection of the water for minutes, wandering what it could be, then it remembered, the lizard, the emu had heard the people talk about a creature like this it had to be the one, she went over to it, she had to touch it as she had also heard the people say how this animal would give any person or creature who touched it the greatest luck in the world. The emu snuck up on the emu, very quietly and as she approached it she put out her long leg, but as she couldn’t balance well on two she slipped, and she didn’t just slip, she slashed the lizard’s leg right off.

The lizard just lay there, it couldn’t move. The emu was worried sick, had she killed this mythical creature which no one else had seen? Suddenly the lizard spoke up, thank you. The emu was amazed, had she heard right? The lizard continued, I need you to do the other ones? The other ones what? Replied the emu, the other legs said the lizard. But I can’t, you are the most amazing creature in the land, I will be cursed, no said the lizard, you will be given one wish. Suddenly in shock the emu continued, she slashed the other legs right off, the lizard now had no way to move, but just as the emu was about to speak, it wriggled it’s body and slowly moved around. The lizard had now become a new creature and the only wish the emu had was to name it, as she thought and thought suddenly she came to; snake relating to the funny sound it made with its tongue.

The Snake gracefully slithered off and whilst it now had more confidence it still became shy at times so spent the whole winter hiding away, in the summer it had built up enough confidence to come out again where it made its way around with out much socializing. As others came near it got scared and reacted but it was only because of the experiences from its past life.

THE SKILLED FISH THAT COOKED ITS SELF.

One day there was a fish and this fish was named johnny. johnny the fish was getting depressed because the water in the river was getting low, so one day he walked out of the river and began a journey to find another river to go live and swim in for the rest of his life. On his journey he was walking down some sand dunes, then suddenly he slipped and had fallen into a snake hole so he decided to camp the for the night.
The next morning he had woken up in the snake hole and witnessed some fish blood on the ground, then he realised the blood was off of his fin and running out onto the ground. Then he heard a 'hiisss' sound and he thought to himself that it was a snake so he jumped out of the snake hole and ran for his life, he did'nt care which direction he ran in he just wanted to get away from the snake.
Later that day he was slowly moving down a big dirt hill and he smelt and sensed water so he ran towards the smell of water, when he got there the was a puddle of water there with fsh bones lying in it, he got really annoyed and scared so he decided that he would gather some wood to make a hut.
Then one stormy night with out any rain thunder struck his little hut, so he quickly army rolled out of his hut and it was on fire, he thought to him self this could be cold so he put his flipper in it and it was very hot so he pulled hes flipper out. A few hours later he was getting very hungry so he decided to cook and eat himself, so he cooked and ate himself and he thought it was nice and tender.
Then a black man came and saw the fish bones and a fire he thought it looked very magical so he put is fist in it but it was very hot so he pulled his fist out then he told his friends and they took the fire to there camp.

THE END!

How the kangaroo got it’s tail..

Once apon a time there was a mum kangaroo and a dad kangaroo and they had a baby kangaroo. ☺
When the baby was born it didn’t have a tail..
So the mum and dad kangaroo took him to the animal doctor and they looked at the baby kangaroo, the doctor said that they needed to find him a tail in a week or he would die..
They named him Joey. He was very cute.. Anyway they went back to the Zoo where they live and they tried to find him a tail. They asked an elephant if they could borrow his tail and he just turned his head and walked away.. The father kangaroo asked a lion if they could borrow his tail and he just gave a loud roar and kept eating his food. The mother kangaroo asked the wombat if she could have his tail and before the wombat could say anything he dropped dead to the ground so they quickly cut of his tail and took it back to the vet and the vet sowed the tail onto Joey and they all lived happily ever after. ☺

Molly and Nita's Dreamtime story:

Once upon at time there was a rose bush that lived near a creek, the rose bush feed all the bees and insects with its delicious nectar. One day the creek dried up and the rose bush was not getting as much water, the rose bush was starting to go brown and decided that it would no longer supply the bees and insects with its nectar. When the bees found out that they could no longer be getting the delicious nectar they were very angry and pricked the rose bush with there stings. That Is why the rose bush has pricks, that is why every time you get pricked it hurts like a bee has stung you. ☺

A long time ago in the dream time, there was a snake called Jar-Jar. Jar-Jar Lived in central Australia among all the other snakes but, he was different from all the others, he was ten meters long and two meters wide. One day Jar-Jar was lying in the sand, soaking up all the sun. Though unknown to him there was a group of men preparing to attack him, the hunters needed food and they thought Jar-Jar was a likely target, just before the hunters attacked. Jar-Jar sensed them took off. The hunters chased Jar-Jar, following his massive trails until they arrive at the Pacific Ocean where Jar-Jar disappeared into the water. Though Jar-Jar is now gone he did make his mark, the trail that the hunters followed are the great lakes and rivers of Australia to day.
