Making Paper Aeroplanes
Designing paper aeroplanes was an outcome of our learning about aerodynamics. Some were clearly well designed, others were not so. This is a place to comment about what we learnt from this experience.
MAKING PAPER PLANES- I thought it was a really fun experience to make paper aeroplanes because we not only learnt a lot about what things you need to make your aeroplane work, we also got to have fun at the same time so I think it was really good. You could clearly see which aeroplanes worked and which ones didn’t, I felt like me and Bianca’s plane was ok but we could have improved it a lot. I think me and Bianca could have looked at our notes and see what we need to make our aeroplane go fast and what little things we need to make it go faster.
Over all I thought this activity was really enjoyable and fun to do. i had a lot of fun and i am sure everyone else did to.
8h were lucky enough to have Mrs. Woodward come in to our class and teach us about force.
We did a few little activities that really helped me understand a little more about force and how things fly. One activity 8h completed was making paper areoplanes. I found this to be a very fun and helpful activity. It got us out of the classroom for a little bit and seeing each others designs were really cool.
Many planes flew a long way and it was how they made there design. for example a plane that stood out to me was Lonnies. It looked flat, it didnt look like it would go far but when i saw him demonstrate it and it flew right across the room on top of the roof i saw the design of his plane was very good.
I enjoyed this activity and i did find it a good way to see how we can make things fly by folding them in different ways. I thought it was a very enjoyable activity by me and others.
Mrs. woodward new all the facts about the topic so we were greatful to have here.
I thought the making paper planes was a really fun thing to do instead of doing stuff in the class all the time.
I wouldn't recomend a job building planes unless your really interested in doing that kind of thing.
Nick and Cal I reckon there's would have flue the furtheriest but they got stuck up the gutter in the roof that was really funny.
We learnt all about lift, drag, thrust and weight which was qiet interesting now the exsamples, lift is as plane fly's air rushes the wings, drag is the faster an object falls, the greater the air resistance, weight is anything can drop to the ground and thrust the push that keeps a plane moving forward is called thrust.
As a class 8h had a block of learning about paper aeroplanes.I thought that making a paper aero plane was really cool and fun.
I really enjoyed this lesson of making paper aeroplanes because the class got to go outside and behave really well and i think my fellow class mates would agree with me.
What i found out that was the most interesting to me was that the design and the shape of the aeroplane is the most important part about a aeroplane. If there is something wrong with the shape of the wings on a aeroplane the plane would simply not fly.
I learnt that when you take your time making a paper aeroplane it flys better, because you have all the perfect folds and it also looks like a plane that would fly.
I also learnt how to make a really good paper plane. I also learnt off Lonnie how to make a really good paper plane. Lonnie told me that a paper plane that has really big wings is better to fly on a not so windy day because the wind would move the paper plane around and it would be crap, and that a paper plane that has really short wings would go good in the wind because the wind can't move the paper plane because it has really short wings.
I would like to further my knowlegde about the shape of a planes wings because it sounds really interesting.
I also would like to do some kind of activity like this again sometime because i learnt alot and found things interesting. Also it was a great success.
When we made paper plans we had a teacher Mrs. Woodwared come and do this activity.
i can't remember much about it because it was last tearm but i remember that we were in groups and we all flew our planes at the same time to see who's plane went the furtherest. Mine didn't, but there were some impressive lengths that the planes went!!
A few weeks ago 8h had a lady mrs woodward come in and teach us about plains.wehad to make our own planes and see if it would fly you could work in pairs or on your own me and maegen worked together. we didnt know how to make plans so we 'borrowed' someone eleses. we got to have a compition and wehen we flew ours it didnt go far at all.
we had fun i think most of the class would have.i thought it was worth getting out of a bit of investagations to fly our planes.
8h enjoid making the plain because we like to do stuff like that. I lernt when you are making a paper plain you need to make the ings thin so it would go ferther and fster like a jet.If you make the wings fater yuo will find it will go slower and not as far.
When Ms Woodward came to teach our class 8H about Force, She also got us to make paper planes and that was really fun because instead of coping things off the board we got to make paper planes and that was change so it was fun.
I didn't know how to make paper planes that flew very good but Nick showed me how to make them. To help my plane fly I glued the the middle bits togehter so my plane would fly for longer. Once everyone had made there paper planes we went outside to see whos paper plane would fly the furtherest. In my opion I thought Lonnie's plane would win. To see who's plane would win we had heats and the winner of each heat went through to the next round. Me and Nick were in the same heat and we both went through to next round. In the final it was Ethan Nick and Me I through first and my plane got stuck in the gutter of the roof, then Nick trough and his plane went up on the roof so all Ethan had to do was make his plane land on the ground and not on the roof. He did that successfully and he won.
The activty was very fun because we got to go out of class so, I would like to do someting like this again.
Last term Mrs. Woodward came into our class and taught us all about force.
Mrs. Woodward had us do a few activities that taught us about the forces that keep a boomerang in the air. One activity required us to crate a paper aeroplane with the new knowledge we had gained.
There were a lot of different designs. The design that stood out the most to me was Lonnie’s. Lonnie had made his aeroplane so that it had a wide wingspan and a small body so it glided, well for no wind but unfortunately there was wind that day and his airplane was pushed off course. The winning plane which was Ethan’s had a smaller wingspan than Lonnie’s plane and it ignored the wind and just glided all the way over to the year 10 lockers.
I thoroughly enjoyed this activity because; I learnt a lot of new and interesting things about air travel and we got to do something fun and active for a change.
Last term 8H were lucky enough to have a block to learn about paper aeroplanes. I really enjoyed it when we made the paper aeroplanes, i thought it was fun.
What i thought was very interesting to me was that your paper aeroplane needs to have perfect folds and the same wing span so it would fly smooth and straight. If your paper aeroplane you made had different wing sizes and the folds were offline and didnt match you paper aeroplane would'nt fly properly, you would just throw it and it would just hit the ground.
I learnt off my classmates that you need might need to make some adjustments to your plane depending on the type of whether it is. A paper aeroplane that would fly good on a windy day is a plane with a short wingspan because the short wings would stop the wind from blowing the plane offline and in another direction. A paper aeroplane to fly on a non-windy day would be a plane with a wide wingspan because the wide wings would create drag and keep the plane in the air for longer and help it go further.
A plane that really stood out to me was Lonnie's paper aeroplane because it had a wide wing span, while in the classroom creating the paper aeroplanes, the people that had already finished making their paper aeroplanes were testing them in the classroom. Lonnie had finished his paper aeroplane by that time and was testing it out, it was flying perfectly across the room with ease. Lonnie was hoping that when we got outside there would be no wind but unfortunatly there was some wind around, so his paper aeroplane did'nt fly like he hoped it would but he still did a great job in the paper aeroplane compition.
The paper aeroplane that won the compition was Ethan's because it had a medium sized wingspan and was perfect for the design for the whether outcome. Ethan's paper aeroplane was a fair distance ahead of everyone else's paper aeroplanes because hes flew right over to the year 10 lockers.
In this block of learning about paper aeroplanes it was a great experience to learn the facts about how to make the perfect paper aeroplane.
Overall I thought this activity was a great enjoyable experience for everyone and i had a lot of fun doing the activity and I am positive that everyone else had a great time aswell.
Over time there have been many outstanding airplanes and the average, complete dud. People have gone to extreme lengths to have the best paper airplane, like NASA who made the world’s largest paper airplane with a wind span of 30 foot 6 or Ken Blackburn who holds the current world record of longest time aloft for 27.76 seconds. The most basic paper plane takes only six steps to complete. The use of paper airplanes was believed to have originated in china over 2000 years ago.
There are multiple goals for a good flight • Distance (javelin throwing). • Time (javelin throwing straight up with subsequent metamorphosis into a sailplane). • Aerobatic (looping). • Stable flight to understand flight mechanics of a good plane.
Although I wasn’t here for this activity along with reading others comments and the internet I now pretty much understand the ways in which paper airplanes fly.
8H were very grateful for having Mrs. Woodward come into our class to teach us facts about “force” We watched a PowerPoint that helped me a lot with understanding what force actually is.
One of the activities was making a paper aero plane, I found this activity fun, I made my aero plane with Denita it was called “MOLLY & NITA” After we finished designing and making our planes we set outside and had a competition on who’s plane flew the furthest. Out of all the planes I thought that Michaels would go the furthest but then it turned out that Lonnie’s plane went the longest.
I really enjoyed this activity it was really good to get out and do something creative instead of just doing bookwork, I really would like to do something like this again.
Our paper plane went okay but we still lost but it flu pretty good it went kinda straight but I made ours with a flat nose on it so it was a kinda different plane shape ours was a normal paper plane but with a flat nose we called ours boob airlines we still lost but it was close we came kinda close to wining but we got knocked out first round some people made some great looking planes and Cal’s panes went up high and got stuck in the gutter it was really funny but if the gutter wasn’t there it would of keep going for a long distance and he may of won the competition
i enjoyed making the paper aeroplanes it was a fun experiment,i don't really no how to comment on this one thing i can say was that some of the planes were clearly well designed and some were just a flop.
It was a good way of learning about force and gravity.I thought it was a good way to learn about the topic because it was hands on and i wasnt as bored. i think i got involved more and it was fun.
On the same day that Mrs. Woodward came into to teach our class about force and how things fly we were told that we would be participating in a fun activity later in the lesson.
Later in the lesson we found out that we would be making paper aeroplanes and then having a contest to see which areoplane would go the furtherest.
Mrs. Woodward said that we could be in pairs to design and produce our paper aeroplanes, Molly I decided that we would be partners. I was not very good at making paper aeroplanes and Molly said she wasn’t either, so when we were making our plane we were watching the Heathcote boys to get an idea how to make a paper areoplane.
We knew that the Heathcote boys would be the people to get ideas off because they are always making aeroplanes with their scarp paper, it would be the same if you wanted to learn to fart. The only problem was that Lonnie’s plane looked too hard to make and all except Ethan were making there planes to fast, we ended up watching Ethan but he was still to fast to get ideas from!
Our plane was named Molly & Nita, when we went outside and launched our planes. I was against Maegan, Chloe, Tash and someone else. I threw our plane into the ground, it went like not even one meter, I was very upset because I wanted to move on to the next level.
Mrs. Woodward told us that the reason a plane could fly was because it had curved wings, when we made our paper areoplane we tried to make it with curved wings, but it didn’t really work because it was very hard to curve paper with out ripping it. We think our paper areoplane did not fly well because we tried to curve the paper. If I ever have to make another areoplane I will definitely not be watching Ethan or any Heathcote boys and I will not try and curve the wings.
I found it interesting that people whose aeroplanes had bent wings didn’t fly, I believe I didn’t learn much because all we did was make aeroplanes out of paper. There was not many facts presented to the class, but I had fun because it was a hands on activity and we got out of class for a little while. I would of liked to learn more facts and different ways that you could use this experiment with out using paper aeroplanes.
Later after the lesson I leant that Ken Blackburn currently holds the Guinness world record for having his areoplane in the air for 27.6 seconds, he claimed the world record on the 10 of August 1998 and it has been ten years since he claimed the record. Ken Blackburn is from USA.
I really would enjoy doing another activity like this because it gets 8h out of our classroom.
After teaching us about how things fly Mrs Woodward gave us an activity on making paper aeroplanes.
This reflected on what we had previously learned and done, we were to make the planes using the knowledge we had gained learning about how things fly.
Their were many different designs made, with some having unique results. It seemed the planes with the shorter wings went further than the planes with longer wings because of the air resistance. It seemed that the more area a wing has the more it will be pushed back, therefore it won't go as far as a plane with shorter wings. This experiment was similar to our experiment with how long the paper can stay in the air, exempt the longer/thicker paper won in this experiment.
The two experiments taught us a lot about how things fly. With learning which thing is good in what area, we learnt how we could improve our paper planes, by getting them too stay in the air longer, and also by getting them to fly further and faster. We also learnt that you can enhance the distance of your plane by the way you aim it, and the time you let go of it.
I learnt a lot from this unit and I hope we can do a experiment like this again, seeing the different designs of paper planes was really interesting especially seeing how each one flew like.

we made paper planes in boomerang come back with ms woodward, who knew lots about the force and aero dynamics, which made it easier to understand.
we had a little competition to see who made the best plane. mine and cals got stuck on the roof and i couldnt get mine down but cal got his.
it was fun to make a paper plane because usually i make them and i get in trouble, so it was a change and i could make one without getting in trouble.
ms woodward was really good and she knew what she was talking about so it made it easier to know stuff and it was easier to remember it.
